Is YOASOBI's absence from Kohaku because of Ayase's tattoos?

"NHK is strict about tattoos"

There are several voices saying that the reason why YOASOBI was left ou of 'Kohaku' was because the composer Ayase's tattoos were regarded as a problem.

Ayase's tattoos seem to be increasing, and the radicalized visuals have raised concerns from the music industry that some parents will frown on [Ayase's tattoos]. In fact, there is even a precedent for the 2002 Kohaku Uta Gassen, where NHK was flooded with protests just because Namie Amuro's tattoo was shown near her left shoulder.

1. You don't have to go to the trouble of rolling up your arms and shirt to make a full show of it.. Not only him, but to those who have them it might seem like a natural and obvious thing, so some might wonder what's wrong with it, but yeah, I think they just wanna show off, which still gives off an intimidating feeling in Japan. (3221, 132, 383)

2. Why keep calling it 'tattoo' when there's its own word in japanese (irezumi). Also, normal people don't get irezumi, so there's literally zero merit to getting one in Japan. (3273, 35, 442)

3. Assuming that YOASOBI's music is good, I think companies chose them cause they're easy to collab with. But because of the tattoos, they have turned into a difficult entity to tie up with, so collabs and exposure will decrease dramatically, resulting in a shrinking of their popularity. (591, 58, 117)

4. Regardless if this is really the reason they weren't invited, they are adults and they should know that tattoos are prejudiced by society on the same level as biker gangs. It's up to the individual to live as he/she pleases (within the limits of the law), but there are also manners. (527, 24, 65)

5. In the past, TV was the only visual media available, so it became a status symbol, and it was important to participate in order to raise one's awareness, but nowadays the Internet, including YouTube, is much more popular. We don't have a TV at home either, so Kohaku is no longer relevant, and there may be many families like that. I think the day will come soon when NHK will no longer be in the position of selecting and giving them the opportunity to perform, but the ones begging them to appear. (205, 17, 183)

6. When you're young, you may think it's cool, but as you get older, tattoos on your wrinkled skin won't look good. It can lead to internal diseases, and when you get sick, you'll be in trouble at the hospital. For someone like me who was born with deformed and bruised skin, I think it's a waste since their parents gave them beautiful skin. I want to tell them to take better care of their own bodies. 7. Ayase's tattoos have been increasing, but even with his tattoos, he appeared on NHK's youth program in the first half of this year and performed a song written for the program. He will not be eliminated from Kohaku because of his tattoo after appearing in that program without any problems. It's simply a matter of scheduling. Ayase himself doesn't think too deeply about the tattoos, since he chooses the design based on his mood at the time. (304, 41, 371)

8. Personally, I wonder why there is so much talk about Kohaku appearances.

I understand that it's a year-end tradition, but the performers are selected according to the convenience of the program (and also due to their individual schedules). It's not like appearing on the show equals popularity, and it's not like such a big deal like it used to be. Even if they don't perform because of the tattoos, they are still popular enough. I would rather enjoy their singing in a regular music show or concert than being forced to sing in a strange production. (403, 20, 65)

9. I think it was during the Olympics, but at the beginning, NHK showed a video of the two singing the song, and I thought that many people were disgusted by the tattoos around his necks. When they stopped using their images during the Olympics, I thought it was probably because of the tattoos, so I get why they can't participate at the end of the year. They had so many piercings too. (90, 9, 9)

10. It's hard to tell from the outside whether not participating in the Kohaku Uta Gassen is a choice by NHK or whether it was offered but turned down. In the past it may have been different, but with today's Kohaku, I think there are more and more declinations for various reasons on the part of the artists. Its prestige is becoming less and less influential, and I think it's simply no longer a program that people are forced to participate in during the busy year-end and New Year holidays. (33, 1, 8)
